Resist the urge to google!

Dear Mind:

You have been working too hard this past week. I know that you've been through a lot in the past two months - preparing for countless tests, surgery, moving, selling a house, starting chemo, losing all that protective hair. But sometimes, dear Mind, you think too much.

When a tiny ping or blip of pain appears at the area of surgery, do not jump to conclusions that it is the cancer returning. When the heart starts to beat faster, do not fear that it is cardiac toxicity from the adriamycin. When the temperature shows a mild gain, do not scream 'infection!'

Mind, get your finger off the panic button. Take an Ativan. Chill out a little. You don't need to work so hard. The body will take care of itself, and if there is a problem -- a REAL problem -- then science and medicine will step in. Constantly running to the internet to look up this symptom or that feeling does nobody any good.

You see, Mind, you need to be in balance with your counterparts, Body and Spirit. Once you are all working together, you will bring calm to your host. Don't you agree that this will be a better way to live during these next few months?

Thank you, Mind, for your time and consideration. Now, either rest or be distracted by something more interesting and fulfilling. And stay away from Google, dammit!

Yours truly,
rachel

Would that the mind were like a TV remote control device! We could shut it off; change the channel, lower the volume and even tape something to consider later. But alas, it's not, and it sounds like you've got a good handle on what you need to be done to achieve some inner peace. Don't think the issue will be settled once and for all; I think you'll have to remind yourself to "let go and let God" as my spiritual friend says.

Do you meditate? If not, maybe a yoga meditation class? I think it's the Buddhists who talk about taming the "monkey mind".

Whenever I ask my daughter - Elizabeth - what to do about something my computer is doing or not doing, she tells me to restart because that usually fixes anything.

One recent difficult period in my life had me thinking - how nice it would be if there were a button I could push that would restart my life. Not all the way back. Just far enough so I could fast forward through that difficult period.

I wish there were such a button for you to push, Rachel.
But no :-{
Not yet.

You're a brave and wonderful woman and a terrific writer. I check in with you and think of you every day.
