Sorry, Mina
Unfortunately, I have a lot to write about today. I'm sitting in a very plush hospital room at HUP, getting IV antibiotics and a blood transfusion.
It started this morning. I had a fever over 101, so we went in to Penn to see the nurse. Something just wasn't right. I had blood drawn, then a chest xray, then blood cultures. Diagnosis: neutropenic fever. My white blood count had dropped really low, and with a fever, there's a danger of infection. So as standard precautions, they admit you to the hospital for a few days to get IV antibiotics. I'm also extremely anemic, so I'm getting some bags of blood pumped into me. I'm also getting daily Neupogen shots to try to boost the WBC count.
It could be worse, though. I'm in a special room in a special part of the hospital. There were no rooms available in the regular (read: plebian) hospital, I was offered a room in The Pavilion. I really am getting the royal treatment. It's sort of embarrassing. But I like it. We were given a menu and our dinner was personally prepared according to our taste. The nurses are really nice. Dr. Glick even came to visit me.
I've probably got a few days here. It all depends on how my body reacts to the antibiotics. If my fever goes down and my WBC goes up, I get out sooner. So I'm meditating on that. Well, meditating sometimes, in between watching the flatscreen TV and opening up the minifridge for a tasty beverage.
Did I mention there's a butler? And afternoon tea at 3 pm every day? It sucks to be me, but it doesn't suck THAT bad.
